Air Canada Basic Economy Breakdown

No carry-on, no changes, and the true cost of "Cheap".

Published on January 12, 2026

Following the trend of US carriers, Air Canada has tightened the belt on its Basic Economy fares. Moving from a generous allowance to a "no carry-on" policy on certain routes, the airline is pushing travelers to upgrade. Here is what you need to know before you click Buy.

The Carry-On Ban

On North American and Sun destination routes, Basic Economy tickets now EXCLUDE standard carry-on bags. You only get one small personal item that must fit under the seat.

Gate Fee Warning

If you show up at the gate with a carry-on bag on a Basic ticket, you will be charged the standard checked bag fee PLUS a $25 handling fee. Total cost: ~$75 at the gate.

The "Invisible" Price

When you add $45 for a checked bag or $60 for an upgrade, that "cheapest" flight is often more expensive than WestJet or Porter standard offerings. Always check the total.

What's Included in Basic?

  • Personal Item (Free)
  • Standard Carry-On (❌ NOT Included)
  • Checked Bag (❌ NOT Included - approx $45)
  • Aeroplan Points (❌ None or 25%)
  • Seat Selection (❌ Fee Applies)

Air Canada Basic is for the true minimalist. If you have anything larger than a backpack, skip Basic and go for Standard.
