Smart Packing

The 2026 Baggage Rulebook

New fees, stricter limits, and how to pack smart.

Published on January 12, 2026

2026 has brought the biggest shake-up to airline baggage policies in a decade. From Southwest ending "Bags Fly Free" on basic fares to stricter EU carry-on enforcement, knowing the rules before you pack is critical. Here is everything you need to know to avoid that $100 gate fee.

The End of "Bags Fly Free"

For years, Southwest Airlines was the outlier. In 2026, even they have introduced fee tiers for "Wanna Get Away" basic fares. If you are flying on a basic economy ticket with ANY major US carrier (AA, Delta, United, Southwest), assume you will pay for a checked bag.

EU "Carry-On" Crackdown

European Low-Cost Carriers (Ryanair, Wizz Air, EasyJet) have standardized their sizer bins. The "squish it in" method no longer works. Gate agents are using digital scanners to verify dimensions. If it sticks out 1cm, you pay.

Smart Bags = No Batteries

A reminder that in 2026, airlines have ZERO tolerance for non-removable lithium batteries in "smart luggage". If you cannot pop the battery out to carry it in the cabin, the bag stays on the ground.
